The sauna renovation was born of a potentially dangerous situation, in which the roof caught fire due to improper installation of the chimney. Previously the interior was clad in drywall. Having destroyed much of it putting out the fire, it was an appropriate time to reconsider the interior surface. The cedar is resurfaced clapboard siding sourced from a local homeowner. This project presented several constraints, from the confined space to the limited material dimensions. Working within those constraints, the opportunities were few, making difficult the desire to find myself in the space. This makes the moment of expression much more powerful. First, the bench, a way to span. Then the shelf, a way to expand.
